Hinaki

Born in Masterton New Zealand in 1976,Samuel Ludden gratuated from Wanganui Regional Polyptych in 1998 majoring in ceramics design and production. He was trained in France of pottery residency from 1999—2000 and held some solo exhibitions in France and in New Zealand, a joint exhibition at River East Gallery and a number of group exhibitions around New Zealand. And he has successfully sold his works through several galleries around New Zealand. This sculpture is based on the shape of Maori (the aboriginal in New Zealand) traditional eel nets which are called ‘hinaki’ and the eels are the most representative creatures in New Zealand. The purpose of this work is to protect the ecology of the rivers which are under constant threat from urban development and pollution. It is his hope that this sculpture visually communicates those stories that increase the understanding of New Zealand culture and inspires people across cultures to work together to protect our natural world.
