Survival

Survival, composed of two parts(a fighter and a drum),reflects the national spirit that the people should fight for their freedom and survival. On one hand, the fighter standing on the drum symbols the Kalinago people who were the original inhabitants of the Caribbean islands. Today these people are on the brink of extinction because of the introduction of modern civilization. So the sculptor makes this work to attract people’s attention to them. On the other hand, the figure, lifting his club ‘Boutou’, stands for a national warrior who is standing on a drum to sound the rhythm that the Kalinago people should continue to fight for their survival as a nation that is facing social discrimination in their country.
