We are one

We Are One is his most important and main work until now. The sculpture has three sides with various Samoan symbols on each. The three sides also stand for the three Pacific races, Polynesian, Melanesian and Micronesian. The inclusion of all the ethnic backgrounds gave him the idea for the name. The newly-born body stands for Spring and Peace, and the round bottom represents friendship, which are the theme of the 9th Chang Chun International sculpture exhibition.

Patrick Mafoe, was born in 1983 in Leone, American Samoa. He started drawing in third grade, and went from pencil to chalk, painting mosaic, ceramic, carving and also to welding cars. He learned from a Master Carver in American Samoa named Sverortquist from the village of Leone, a well-known artist around Pacific. He has joined an art Festival called Tafesilafa’I in the summer of 2004 in Long Beach, California at Queen Mary. He is a lecturer for the Community College in American Samoa dealing with traditional elei prints like printing a fabric material and teaches how to carve storyboard and traditional patterns in wood. He is good at wooden totem poles, carves, and traditional handicrafts. This young artist will explain art from his understanding in a unique way.
